Estrogen Patch Shortage: Use AI to Track and Report It

ai for menopause claude memory estrogen patch shortage menopause menopause brain fog Oct 12, 2026
A woman’s hands writing in a journal beside a coffee at a café bar in soft morning light.

Key takeaways

  • A shortage becomes a productivity problem when you spend your week tracking down a prescription.
  • Three fields capture your experience: date, pharmacy, outcome.
  • AI formats the record. You decide what gets sent and to whom.

What landed in my patient portal

On August 31, a message arrived in my patient portal.

The national estrogen patch shortage continues, it said. Would I consider switching off patches? A coupon came with it: 50 percent off my first month, good through September 10.

Read that again, a medication change, with an expiration date on the discount.

Here is what happened next. I asked my prescriber a direct question and got a straight answer. Matched doses can give similar symptom control across patches, creams, and tablets, and there was no pressure to switch. That is what good care sounds like. Every woman should know it exists.

Your answer may differ. The options vary in absorption, dosing patterns, cost, convenience, and risk considerations, so ask your own prescriber.

What the record shows

Underneath the coupon sits a gap between what pharmacies see and what the official record says.

  • January 2026: The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) began listing estrogen patches on its shortage list. A July letter from House members says ASHP has listed 14 brands or dosages since January.
  • July 31: Eight members of the House wrote to the FDA’s acting commissioner. Their letter says the agency relies on historic demand data that “may be lagging given how quickly demand for the patches has spiked.”
  • September 3: The FDA said patches “remain available” and declined to add them to its federal shortage list.

Count it out: about eight months of women calling pharmacies while the federal list showed no shortage.

Demand did rise. Truveta data reported by Healthline shows estrogen patch use more than tripled between 2018 and early 2026. The House letter cites a separate analysis by Epic Research that found a 72 percent rise in patch prescriptions between 2021 and fall 2025. Different datasets, same direction.

Why access problems become productivity problems

Cognitive load is not a character flaw. It is the tax you pay for holding forty open loops while you also chase a prescription.

Every pharmacy call is time you did not spend on a client, a deliverable, or a decision. For a founder, an executive, or a broker, that time has a price. You need a system that holds the loops, so your attention goes to the work only you can do.

AI Tool Spotlight: Claude’s unified memory

On August 25, Anthropic merged the memory used in Claude chat and its Cowork workspace. It is on by default for Free, Pro, and Max plans. Memory now updates as you chat, rather than summarizing at the end of a conversation.

Here is why that matters at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday, when you cannot retrieve the name of the vendor you approved last month.

Do this today, in ten minutes. Open Claude and say: “Remember that I’m tracking my pharmacy access. Log the date, the pharmacy, and the outcome each time I report one.” Then feed it one line each time something happens.

Privacy check. By default, Claude does not store health data in memory. To keep it, first turn on the “include sensitive topics in memory” setting. You can read, edit, or delete anything it saves. Keep identifiers out, such as prescription numbers, insurance IDs, and birthdates. A plain spreadsheet works just as well.

Brain fog and the evidence file

Let’s be clear about what AI is and is not.

AI does not make estrogen. It will not replace your patch, and any brand that tells you otherwise is selling the story the system has already sold us: adapt to scarcity instead of fixing it.

What AI does is carry the tracking, drafting, and follow-up, so you stop holding it all in your head. It also helps you build the case your doctor cannot build alone.

The House letter says the agency’s demand data may lag. You are the missing data. Here is how to become countable.

Step 1: Build the log. Every pharmacy call, every “we’re out,” every substitution, every gap in medication. Three fields:

Date

Pharmacy

Outcome

(example) September 4

Pharmacy A, [city]

Out of stock, no restock date

(example) September 9

Pharmacy B, [city]

Filled, 2-week supply only

Step 2: Have AI turn it into a report. Use this prompt:

Convert this log into a factual supply-disruption report for a federal agency. No diagnosis, no emotion, no advice. Dates, locations, and outcomes only.

Step 3: Draft the letter to your representative. Use this prompt:

Write a 200-word constituent letter asking my member of Congress to support adding estradiol transdermal patches to FDA’s official shortage list. Reference the January 2026 ASHP listing and the FDA’s September 3, 2026 response.

Thirty minutes of work. A record that outlasts your memory of the bad week.

This week’s challenge: put yourself on the record

Twenty minutes. One outcome.

  1. Open your AI tool of choice. Reconstruct every estrogen access problem from the last year: every call, every substitution, every gap.
  2. Have it format the result into a clean, factual report.
  3. Email it to drugshortages@fda.hhs.gov. Patients, prescribers, and pharmacists can all report. [CONFIRM ADDRESS ON FDA’S DRUG SHORTAGE PAGE]
  4. Forward the same file to your prescriber and your member of Congress.

One woman’s log is an anecdote. Many logs build the demand record the agency says it lacks.

We were handed a coupon and asked to be flexible. Flexible is not the same as quiet. Build the log, file the report, send the letter, and let AI hold the parts of your brain that are busy fighting for your own prescription.

Your edge is not the problem. Access and a lagging data model are both responsive to documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an estrogen patch shortage right now?
Pharmacists and patients have reported difficulty finding estrogen patches in 2026. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists has listed patches on its shortage list since January 2026. The FDA has said patches remain available and has not added them to its federal shortage list. Call your pharmacy and ask your prescriber which options are best for you.

Can I switch from estrogen patches to cream or tablets?
That is a decision for you and your prescriber. Patches, creams, and tablets differ in absorption, dosing patterns, cost, convenience, and risk considerations. My prescriber told me that matched doses can give similar symptom control, and I felt no pressure to switch. Ask yours what fits your situation.

How do I report an estrogen patch shortage to the FDA?
Patients, prescribers, and pharmacists can email drugshortages@fda.hhs.gov. Send facts only: dates, pharmacies, products and strengths requested, and what happened. Leave out diagnoses, opinions, and personal identifiers such as prescription numbers or insurance IDs.

What should I put in a pharmacy shortage log?
Use three fields: date, pharmacy, and outcome. Add the product and strength for more detail. Record each call, each out-of-stock answer, each substitution, and each day without your medication.

Can AI help with menopause brain fog?
AI does not treat menopause or replace medical care. It can carry the load of tracking, drafting, and follow-up, so you spend less effort holding details in your head. In Menopause OS, the workflow is capture, organize, execute, verify.

Is it safe to put health information into an AI tool?
Check the tool’s privacy settings first. Claude does not store health data in memory by default. You must turn on the sensitive topics setting to keep it, and you can read, edit, or delete what it saves. Keep identifiers such as prescription numbers, insurance IDs, and birthdates out of any AI tool, and share only what you are comfortable having stored.
